Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas, ANGEL, Brightspace by D2L, Blackboard, Moodle, and Sakai. When students use Respondus LockDown Browser they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. LockDown Browser should only be used for taking Canvas Quizzes. It should not be used in other areas of Canvas. Installing LockDown Browser. If LockDown Browser has already been installed, skip to the next section. If not, LockDown Browser must be installed on each computer (Windows or Mac) being used to take a test. You must have. Respondus has now released a beta version of LockDown Browser for Mac that is also based on Chromium. This will enable you to move away from reliance on Safari Webkit, giving more control over the browser environment. To download the beta version of LockDown Browser for Mac, go to the current page where students download LockDown Browser for Mac. Note to students: this is not Respondus LockDown Browser and is not a student application used for taking online exams.Contact your instructor to obtain the correct download link for LockDown Browser.
The Respondus Lockdown Browser application is a separate browser that your instructor may require to take a test in Blackboard. If a test in Blackboard says Requires Respondus LockDown Browser, you cannot take the test using a standard browser such as Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Internet Explorer. The LockDown Browser application only needs to be installed one time on a computer.
Step 1
Log in to myMason.gmu.edu, select the Courses tab.
Step 2
Scroll down the page until you see the module Respondus (Students) and click the link for LockDown Browser application.
Step 3
Follow the on-screen prompts to download the correct Respondus browser for your computer (Windows or Mac).
Step 4
Locate and double-click the downloaded file to start the setup process and follow on-screen instructions.
Step 5
Once installed, open the application. Look for the LockDown Browser icon.
Look for the LockDown Browser icons—it will look like one of the ones below.
When you click on the icon, it will open directly to myMason, where you can log in and find your course.
Step 6
You can now begin your exam. Please read all instructions as your instructor may require a password to enter the test.
To use the Respondus LockDown Browser, please launch the application from your desktop.

To check whether the LockDown Browser application has already been installed on your computer, look for the following icon on your Windows desktop:
or, look for the application using the Windows Start Menu: Start > All Programs / Respondus; Lockdown Browser
To verify that you are running the latest version, start Respondus LockDown Browser and select the i button from the toolbar, and then click Check for Newer Version. The version will be displayed, and you will be able to download a newer version if one is available.
